November 2009 – First Resident at Birdhouse

Rodrigo Novaes, a Brazilian painter, sculptor, filmmaker, and philosopher, was our first artist in residence at the Birdhouse.  During his two months in Austin, Rodrigo painted over one dozen canvases at his studio at Big Medium where he was featured in the main gallery during the East Austin Studio Tour, created a sculpture, and completed a short film with a local writer/actor. Along with his work, Rodrigo was featured in November’s issue of Cantanker Magazine and was also covered by Fox 7. Rodrigo’s experience in Austin is exactly what we hoped it would be. He made local relationships and his work reflects his experience in Austin.  The Birdhouse Collective hosted an event to kick-off the new Artist Residency Program and bid farewell to our first artist. We are looking to develop a relationship with local businesses who support the local arts and promoting Austin around the world, and we also welcome solicitations from artists to spend time at the Birdhouse.
